Analysis of census data by YIMBY Melbourne counted at least 12.2 million spare bedrooms nationally, with 53 per cent of owner households having two or more unused rooms. The group argued stamp duty and planning limits discouraged older Australians from downsizing. A Sydney home share between a 27-year-old and her housemate, who was approaching 100, was presented as one way spare rooms could be used.
