Rentvesting was gaining traction beyond first home buyers, largely because of the six-year rule, which allows an owner who lives in a property before letting it out to keep the main residence exemption from capital gains tax for up to six years. PIPA chair Nicola McDougall said she had used the approach herself, retaining a Brisbane property as her nominated residence while renting elsewhere.
