Rental freezes to cause more pain, according to peak body

PIPA and PICA blamed state taxes and tenancy changes for Victoria’s worsening rental shortage, labelling the state the toughest in the country for renters. Their analysis of Australian Taxation Office figures showed the average annual increase in net individual investors nationally had dropped from about 66,000 to roughly 29,600 across two five-year periods. PICA chair Ben Kingsley warned that proposed rent freezes would deepen the shortfall rather than ease it.
