Several residential builders collapsed during 2021, including Privium in Brisbane, Inside Out Construction in Tasmania and Melbourne’s ABD Group, despite near record construction volumes. Material shortages, sharply higher timber and steel costs, labour scarcity and long delivery delays had eroded margins, with fixed price contracts leaving many companies losing money on every project.
