New Victorian rental reforms a “disaster” for tenants and landlords, experts warn

Industry bodies criticised the Victorian government’s package of renter protections, which included scrapping no-fault evictions and tighter bond rules, arguing none of the six measures gave landlords any reason to stay. They pointed to a drop of about 22,000 active bonds in the year to June 2024 as evidence rentals were leaving the market. Tenant advocates countered that the changes mainly reduced how often renters were forced to move.
