Median weekly rents break records, crashing through $600 barrier

CoreLogic’s rental update showed the national median rent reached a record $601 a week, with annual growth of 8.3 per cent against overall inflation of 4.3 per cent. Head of research Eliza Owen linked the pressure to smaller household sizes, rapid population growth and a lull in investor activity, while the share of median household income needed to cover rent rose to 31 per cent.
