Housing rent – the inflation busting investment of the year

Rental income was presented as an unusually effective inflation hedge, with national rents up about 14 per cent over the year against annualised inflation of 6.1 per cent, and Sydney and Brisbane house rents up 20 per cent. Investor lending had rebounded to about $11.6 billion a month excluding refinancing. An industry report co-authored with PIPA finding that rents had lagged inflation over the decade was contested by SQM Research, which criticised the underlying data.
