Housing crisis leaves Victorian town Castlemaine with just 10 homes to rent

PropTrack figures showed 68 regional centres with populations above 20,000 had rental vacancy rates under one per cent, with the Victorian goldfields town of Castlemaine listing only 10 homes for lease against roughly 600 people seeking one. Housing workers there were approaching owners of vacant dwellings and converting space above shops into rentals. Advocates argued a large expansion of social housing was the more durable fix.
