Queensland moved to let homeowners rent granny flats to people outside their immediate family for three years, a change recommended at the state’s housing roundtable. The deputy premier said using existing accommodation would house more residents quickly and give owners extra income, and the Planning Institute of Australia supported the measure. PIPA research had found the state lost close to a third of its rental dwellings over two years.
