An industry figure argued the rental shortage stemmed from years of disincentives to invest, including tighter lending after the banking royal commission and tenancy changes that reduced landlord control. He cited joint PIPA and PICA research showing rents rose 11 per cent nationally over the decade to June 2022 while inflation rose 25.6 per cent. His proposed remedies began with ending the demonisation of ordinary landlords.
