Shortage of investors worsens rental crisis

Joint research by the Property Investors Council of Australia and PIPA found the national population gained 1.8 million people over the five years to March 2024, requiring roughly 145,000 additional investors to fund 212,000 new rentals. Tax office data showed only about 110,000 entered the market, leaving a shortfall of 35,000. PICA chair Ben Kingsley linked the gap to the national vacancy rate falling from 3 per cent in 2017 to 1.2 per cent in 2024.
